SaySo, a creator-led news app from the media holding company Caliber, launched on iOS in the U.S. and Canada in April 2026 after a private beta that began the previous November, with roughly 30 creators covering topics from congressional finance to racial justice. Its central design decision is unusual for a news product: the daily digest is finite, curated, moderated, and refreshed roughly every 20 hours. According to NetInfluencer's interview with Caliber Chief Product and Technology Officer Dion Bailey, when the team ran user testing and offered a choice of three-, five-, and ten-minute sessions, every participant picked three — and then most stayed longer.

That result is the whole argument for this post. A feed without an end cannot be "finished," which means completion cannot be measured, which means the one property every casual-but-engaged reader says they want — to feel informed and know they are done — is not a property the product can guarantee. Why the three-minute choice became a finite-digest thesis

Bailey is not a first-time news-product builder. Before co-founding The News Movement in New York in 2021 with Ramin Beheshti, now Caliber's CEO, he spent nearly four years as VP and Head of Technology and Architecture at The Wall Street Journal, with prior senior technology roles at News UK (publisher of The Times of London) and BBC News. His reading of where legacy publishers fell short is direct: he felt they were not moving fast enough to address a new market that was coming.

The shift from letting users choose a session length to making the digest finite came from user feedback rather than product instinct. Bailey says the consistent thread across the companies he worked at was that users wanted to feel they could finish — because there is always more and more. SaySo's response was to remove "more" as the default state of the artifact. That is a routing decision before it is a content decision: the platform decides the digest ends, and everything downstream — moderation cadence, creator mix, measurement — is sized to that boundary.

Bailey says users are regularly getting through more than 75% of the full digest, a rate he calls higher than the team anticipated, and he qualifies it as early-stage user signal on a platform still in its first months. Bailey's phrasing is the mechanism laid bare: just looking at the raw amount of comments is not enough. The way to go further is how much people reply to these comments, and how long the actual thread is. Likes, nested responses, and interactions with supplementary features all factor into a piece's score.

This is the same principle as the finite digest, applied one layer down. A comment count is a proxy; thread depth is the mechanism that captures whether a piece actually moved an audience rather than merely reached one. The proxy is easy to inflate; the mechanism is hard to fake, because a deep thread requires a real exchange between people who chose to keep going.

The participation-inequality spectrum

SaySo is designed to center what Bailey calls the first 10% of the engagement spectrum, drawing on a participation-inequality principle that positions 1% of users as superfans, 9% as actively engaged, and 90% as passively influenced by those groups. The framing is that many companies have an incredible amount of followers but do not really have an audience — and that is a difference.

For SaySo specifically, where the platform remains in early stages, MovementIQ currently focuses on time spent per story, time spent across the full digest, and whether users engage with the app's source-checking tool. The topic distribution initially skewed heavily toward politics, reflecting the first wave of creators; Bailey says the heat map has since become more even.

Every piece of content on SaySo moves through a three-step pipeline before it reaches a digest. Creators upload with thumbnails and metadata; the content enters a moderation suite that combines AI-assisted filtering with process-driven safety checks — a first pass screens for harmful content, a second assesses whether the piece's tone and sentiment align with the platform's values. The final stage is human review.

Bailey, a self-described technologist who likes AI, is explicit that he is also a realist, and that human-in-the-loop is a core thing he thinks is very important. A human reviewer approves each piece before it is distributed into the daily digest or the platform's Explore feed, where content is also discoverable outside a user's personalized rotation.

The Honest Architect reading: the AI-assisted passes are a routing layer that reduces the load on the human reviewer; the human approval is the measurement that defines "safe to publish." Remove the human and you have an AI label with no guarantee. On source citation, SaySo currently authenticates that a creator's cited links are real, with plans to go further. Bailey says Caliber intends to integrate verification tools that assign probability scores to cited facts, and that there are definitely plans to have more ways to validate.

The deeper connection between SaySo's design and ours is normalization through finiteness. The Oracle's ensemble is finite and normalized; probabilities sum to one. An infinite, unbounded ensemble cannot be normalized — there is no denominator — which is exactly why an infinite feed cannot report completion. Both systems make a property measurable by bounding the space first. Bailey says the real core of what Caliber wanted to do was give people control — the instinct behind a daily digest that ends. That is a sovereignty claim, even if the platform does not use the word. A reader who can finish is a reader who decides when they are done; a reader on an infinite feed is a reader the system never lets decide.

Bailey's approach is to redesign what creator value looks like on the platform. Founding creators receive stipends during an initial period — six to 12 months, he says — for the transition from stipend to self-sustaining income. Some members of the earliest cohort have already moved through that period and continued publishing voluntarily.

Payment features are in active testing. Caliber is experimenting with microtransactions that route money directly between users and creators, stepping back from the transaction rather than taking an intermediary cut. A broader rollout is planned within six months.
